I’m about 1/2 Song of Bernadette,  which seems to be the book to read on St. Bernadette.  I’m seeing what, I think,  Franz Werfal saw in her that made her to special to him.   His semi-fictional Bernadette is innocent and pure and good,  but she’s not passive.  She’s stubborn and brave and angry and totally unimpressed by all the powerful people who come around to threaten her.  She makes them afraid. She makes the power representatives of the state and the church afraid of some little girl.  Some little poor and unintelligent girl.  The more I think about her, the more I adore her.  Dear Saint Bernadette, Chosen by Almighty God as a channel of His Graces and Blessings, and through your humble obedience to the requests of Our Blessed Mother, Mary, you gained for us the Miraculous waters of Spiritual and physical healing.
