Protestant moment at a Catholic church
ohzeitgeist:
dmbliss:
I just attended a service a roman catholic church around the corner from my BF’s house. While there I had a super Protestant moment. The church was very nice and so was the service, but I was having an issue with the abundance of Mary and the lack of representations of Christ.
Above/behind the altar was a huge painting of Sts Anne and Mary, while all the windows were...

internet person: Why is a 2000+ year old book written by privileged religious men somehow a valid operating manual for our bodies in the present day?
me: Actually, you might want to look a little deeper into the history of the Bible. Significant portions of the Old Testament were written while the Israelites were in exile and persecuted as oppressed people. Even among the Israelites, the ones who continued to practice the traditional religion were alienated at certain points. Not exactly "privileged."

Great Hudson River Swim →
I want to do this swim, but I am somewhat put off by the note about “flotsam and jetsam in the water”. I watch Law & Order, so I assume that is a euphemism for corpses.
So, New Yorkers, just how gross is the Hudson river? I’ve swam along the Chicago magnificent mile, which was not that gross and in Miami harbor which was way too gross. But I think temperature was a...

We Need Boring Christians →
aka “discipleship is not adventure tourism. ”
I think this is my favorite part:
“but an untested 20-something without the work ethic required for completing the annoying accounting project or the boring research paper will likely be of little help in dire situations overseas.”
"vanilla privilege"

the day a neckbeard straight man who has the entitlement and wtfever else it takes to live out his gorean fantasy of owning a 24/7 slavegirl is systemically oppressed for it will be the day that i become straight myself.

Men and Church →
shortbreadsh:
“An exploratory page, dedicated to the possibility founding of the FoE, an society for the promotion of a the role of men in the Church.”
Maybe churches should stop ordaining men, limit them to roles with lots of work but no decisions making power, refuse to use male pronouns to describe God and generally treat men as less important than women. Then maybe men would...

AHS fangirls, here is what you need to do to save Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga: rubber gimp suits, mailed with high priority to Ryan Murphy. Wear them first, use lube the way Evan Peters claims he did to slip into one. Do not wash prior to sending.
I mean it will be worth it if only for the look on his face
Or the faces of retailers when the demand for specific kink-wear...

Today I listened to NPR covering “Top Stories of the Year” or something where they segued straight from Harold Camping to Rob Bell, by saying, “speaking of hell….”
I thought, oh boy, I hope Bananena is listening.

I got kind of hung up on Michelle Bachman for a while. Torn between “being an actual elected official makes you a bigger deal than some dude who is hot shit on the internet” and “any woman no matter how terrible is preferable to Hugo Swchyzer on any list ever”
I am just amazed at how angry this dude makes me, and all...

I will go down with the ship of problematic because I want to keep a word that can be used to describe something in between a “fairy unicorn of social justice perfection” and “the most evil douchefucky oppressive triggering propaganda ever made.” It’s a word that implies nuance.
There are so many words/phrases I hate more. I think “identity policing” is...

If I never see the word “problematic” again it will be too soon.
i literally cannot write earnestly without using it
i have tried and i can’t figure out how
i resort to using it in demi-italics in my brain to shield myself from embarrassment
I will go down with the ship of problematic because I want to keep a word that can be used to describe something in...

Nearly as bad as "non-otherkin privilege"
lilacturtl:
The concept of “ableism” being trotted out to condemn women for calling a self-described narcissist sociopath a narcissistic sociopath. In all seriousness, if we cannot differentiate between mental illness (ie schizophrenia, PTSD) and CHARACTER/personality disorder (sociopathy, narcissism) then why bother calling men out for anything, ever? After all, if the worst misogynists are...

Social justice activists in real life and on tumblr are not here to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I’m not sure how many times we need to talk about this but here it goes:

Yelp Review of John King Books →
As a former John King employee, it makes me happy that most of the reviews praise the staff, call them “human rolodexes” and marvel and their collective literary knowledge and ability to navigate the totally nonsensical classification system.
But I can say from experience that a bunch of college English majors, working in a dust filled hovel, hot in the summer, cold in the winter,...

Liking the same music as somebody is a fun conversation-starter, but no basis for a friendship. You don’t need to like everyone who likes the same band as you.
Caveat: if you like everyone or look down on everyone in a particular fanbase, that says a lot about you and very little about that fanbase.
The exception to this rule is Atlas Shrugged.

oh my god this is some funny shit. “and even one of his t-shirts” oh boy
TBH, I would for real participate in a contest to have dinner with Derrick Jensen’s mom. (who still packs his suitcase for him whenever he goes on book tours)
I would also participate in a fundraiser where you got to see Derrick Jensen and Anne Lamont duke it out, American Gladiators style.
Idk why...
